Greetings to this new forum. I am privileged to write the first international message. Here in the Estonian islands the wooden sailing boats are particularly rare, and my folkboat Pelagia (Sweden 1956, originally Pierina) is the only one of this class on Dagö. Here is also a Laurin from Finland, one L6 made in Leningrad, and some very nice locally made gaff rigged fishermen type.

Now to my question. I like to use traditional materials, e.g. "ettan", which I made from beeswax and tar (tjära). I know also that the sheep tallow (talg) was in old days used in compound. Please does anybody know the recipe for "ettan" which contains wax, tar and tallow (vax, tjära och talg)?

Tom

Hello!
You don´t need any tallow if you got Ettan. Ettan with tar and wax only will suffice for you. Tallow was used in early times but is not as good as Ettan since the fat will go bad with time. Even if you refine the tallow with alcohol it will not add any extra to Ettan and I have not heard of the combination with tallow in mixture with Ettan. But I have not heard everthing :D

Tallow is useful in case of lack of Ettan, but not as good if you ask me. Or do you have any special considerations to use tallow?

Thank you for the quick reply!

I have no special idea about tallow, I have only heard from Sweden that it was used. The problem with home-cooked ettan (wax+tar) is that it is not that sticky as the original one. I thought to try with tallow, if it improves the consistence. But I agree, it might be dangerous, since bacteria may like it.

OK, I will try anyway and we shall see. Tack!

OK!
But if you want Ettan to be more sticky you should use more tar (just a little at the time) until you get what you want (tar is good for your boat anyhow since it is a fungcid and prohibits the rot).

If it is just the consistency when you work with Ettan that you want to be softer, try to warm it a bit (then keep it warm with the jug placed in hot water, maybe with a stove or heater or anything).

Good luck!
